Cristian Roman MSc PhD

Senior Research Associate

COLLEGE: Kellogg College

Biography

Cristian has a background in Computer Science (M.Sc.) and Broadband Networks (M.Sc.), with a specialisation in scheduling algorithms applied to wireless vehicular networks (Ph.D.). His research interests centre around developing algorithms and wearable electronic monitoring systems for automated decision making and clinical support. These digital systems serve two main purposes: predicting clinical deterioration in hospitalised patients and enabling self-management of chronic conditions, like hypertensive pregnancies, through home monitoring. To achieve these goals, the systems utilise mobile apps, incorporate automated decision-making capabilities, and leverage real-time machine learning techniques.

Research Interests

  • Signal processing
  • Remote patient monitoring
  • Wearable devices
  • Real-time machine learning applied to healthcare

Current Projects

  • Remote home blood pressure monitoring for hypertensive pregnancies with semi-automatic medication changes.
  • Discovery of undiagnosed hypertension using routinely collected electronic health data.
  • Wearable devices and alerting algorithms for early detection of deterioration in post-surgery patient
  • Detecting prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation in post-ICU patients using a wearable chest-patch.
  • Remote monitoring of in-hospital COVID-19 patients and COVID-19 Challenge Trials participants using wearable devices.
  • Virtual Wards and Hospital at Home.
