Alva Orr MPhys

DPhil Student

COLLEGE: Brasenose College; The Queen's College

Biography

Alva Orr is a second-year DPhil candidate, working jointly with the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics. They did a MPhys in Physics at Trinity College Oxford, and are a Stipendiary Lecturer in Physics at Brasenose College, where they teach Thermal Physics and Statistical Mechanics.

Research Interests

My focus is at the intersection of Physics and Engineering - taking advanced theoretical and computational techniques and applying them to better understand the fundamentals behind liquid crystal devices and their manufacture, with the aim to explore a variety of materials on a variety of speed and length scales.

Research Projects

  • Lattice Boltzmann Simulations of Liquid Crystal Droplets and Devices - using LB techniques to gain fundamental insight into the operation of emerging thin-film Liquid Crystal technologies.
  • Inkjet Printing of Liquid Crystals
  • High-speed observation of Liquid Crystals
