2017 DR Harting Award for Outstanding Paper of the Year

Congratulations to Professor Clive Siviour, Dr Kalin Dragnevski and Omar Islam who received the prestigious DR Harting Award given by the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) at their Annual Conference held in Indianapolis, USA.

The award, named in honour of Darrell R. Harting, one of Experimental Techniques founders and former SEM President, was formally established in 1987 to recognise the best paper published in Experimental Techniques in a given year. The authors received the award for their paper titled, “In-Situ Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope Observations of Colloidal Failure Mechanisms using the Brazilian Disk Test”.

Professor Siviour and Dr Dragnevski, both in the Department of Engineering Science, would like to acknowledge Omar for his excellent work. His final year research project focussed on experimental techniques for structural and mechanical characterisation of materials in-situ, using Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy and led to three publications, including the paper in Experimental Techniques.
