Ophthalmic Engineering

eyemodel1Research is underway within the Civil Engineering Research Group on the study of certain aspects of the mechanical behaviour of the human eye. This research is concerned concerned principally with studies on the mechanics of accommodation and the causes of presbyopia .

The research approaches being pursued are based, very substantially, on procedures for characterising the mechanical behaviour of materials that have been developed in the fields of mechanical and civil engineering. Current research also based heavily of the use of computational  techniques (principally the finite element method) to develop models of the accommodation process.

The research is based in the Jenkin Building (on the Keble Road triangle site). Tests on lens stiffness are conducted in a separate laboratory in the Botnar Building.
