Departmental Events
- Open Day on Thursday, 26th November 2009
The Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) is holding an Open Day on Thursday, 26th November 2009 (between 2pm and 5pm) at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME). This will be a great opportunity to find out more about the DPhil in Healthcare Innovation. Full details about the Open Day and how to register can be found on the following poster. - The Medtronic Lecture in Biomedical Engineering - 18th May 2009
This annual lecture, sponsored by the Medtronic Foundation, is given by an internationally-renowned scholar in the field of Biomedical Engineering. In addition to giving the lecture, the lecturer spends a week in Oxford interacting with students, including thse sponsored by Medtronic, and with academics all who are working in biomedical engineering and medicine. There is a programme of meetings and presentations which culminates in the Medtronic Lecture. - Unveiling of the new Robert Hooke portrait - 11th June 2009
Rita Greer, history painter, has generously donated a new Robert Hooke portrait to the Department of Engineering Science. Hooke's portrait was unveiled on 11th June by guest speaker Dr Allan Chapman, a historian of science and national broadcaster. - The Maurice Lubbock Memorial Lecture - 18th June 2009
The Maurice Lubbock Memorial Lecture was founded in 1963. It commemorates the life of the Hon Maurice Lubbock, and his interest in promoting the study of engineering and its applications. The Lecture is intended "for a scientific and lay audience, on engineering in relation to its environment - its industrial application, its place in society, its significance for managers, sociologists, economists and others, and its significance for education". The first Lecture was delivered in the Department of Engineering Science on February 28th 1964 by Sir Harold Hartley, who spoke on "The Contribution of Engineering to the British Economy". The Department is grateful to Lord Avebury and trustees of the Maurice Lubbock Memorial Fund for their continued support of the lecture. - Society of Oxford University Engineers Annual Meeting and Jenkin Lecture - 26th September 2009
The Jenkin Lecture will be given at 2.00pm by Simon Watts MBE FREng, Chief Scientist of Thales at Crawley, who will speak on Airborne Surveillance Radar.
The lecture will be preceded by a buffet lunch at 1.00pm, by the SOUE Annual Meeting at 12.15pm and by two shorter talks by members of the Department - at 11.00am by David Clifton on Early warning systems via machine learning: from jet engines to hospital patients and at 11.30am by Dr Byron Byrne on Geotechnical engineering for offshore pipelines. For more information go to details.
Special Lectures
- The Inaugural Katritzky Lecture
This lecture, with the title
The Genius of Michael Faraday
is to be given in the Lecture Theatre, Inorganic Chemistry Department, at 5pm on Monday 23rd February. All are welcome
Speaker:
Sir John Meurig Thomas FRS FREng, Professorial Research Fellow at the Royal Institution.
The lecture is one of a series of events arranged by St Catherine's College in the CatzFiveZero programme leading up to the fiftieth anniversary of the College in 2012. For more details go to: poster.
Scientific Meetings
- 2nd Oxford and Nottingham Water and Membranes Research Event
Following the very successful meeting in 2006 this second event was planned for June 18-20th, 2008, and was held at St Hilda's College, Oxford. The theme encompassed any aspect of potable and wastewater treatment, the use of membranes for aqueous separations and synergies between the two. The event was organised by Dr Nick Hankins, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Water Engineering in this Department and Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Centre for Clean Water Technologies, University of Nottingham. Further information on the event may be seen on the attached document.
