Biography

Rebecca McFadden is a Daphne Jackson fellow in the Machine Learning Research Group; exploring the application of machine learning techniques to the challenges posed by large astronomical data sets. She holds a PhD in Astrophysics (on astro-particle detection using the lunar Cherenkov technique) from the University of Melbourne and works closely with the Astrophysics group at the University of Oxford.

She began her career as a graduate radar-systems engineer with the Australian Department of Defence, where she also completed a Masters of Mathematics in Applied Science (Signal and Information processing). As a post-doctoral researcher, she also spent two years working as a support scientist commissioning the cosmic ray pipeline of the LOFAR (LOw Frequency ARray) at ASTRON, in the Netherlands. She has technical expertise is in the areas of radar signal processing, nano-second pulse detection and ionospheric calibration.

She also holds Bachelors Degrees in both Electrical Engineering (Hons I) and Science (Computer Science/Physics).
