Dr Martin Walker is the Mary Ewart Junior Research Fellow at Somerville College and the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford . He completed his PhD in the Advanced Structures Group at the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering supervised by Dr Keith Seffen. Prior to his PhD he was a structural engineer at Expedition Engineering and Explora Security.
Martin obtained his Masters degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Toronto (Canada) and Bachelors degree from the University of Waterloo (Canada).
Martin's research investigates how localised deformations influence the mechanical behaviour of thin shells. Recently he has been investigating the influence of creases on the large-deflection behaviour of thin plates.
His research focuses on developing concise mathematical models which are verified using careful experimentation and finite element analysis. His work seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical mechanics and engineering applications.
