I have been engaged in research on the dynamics of marine
and offshore structures since 1970. Early work on the dynamics of ships and platforms
in random waves led to a major interest in wave loading and fluid-structure
interactions. Subsequently this has been focused particularly on floating and
compliant platforms. Recent interests have been the prediction of non-linear
diffraction effects due to waves and currents, and computational fluid
dynamics. I am now particularly engaged in research into fully non-linear
transient wave problems, and other ocean engineering projects, including wave
energy. A selection of recent
publications is available. I usually attend the International Workshop on
Water Waves and Floating Bodies (IWWWFB). In
2005-6 I was invited to give the 28th Georg Weinblum Memorial Lecture, and the resulting paper [On
Modelling the Diffraction of Water Waves, Ship Technology Research 54/2 (2007),
pp. 54-80] gives an indication of my interests in diffraction problems. I
currently have a close collaboration with the Centre for Offshore Research and
Engineering (CORE) at the National University of Singapore.
I am an Emeritus Fellow in the University of Oxford. I am a
Visiting Professor in Maritime Technology at the National University of
Singapore (Centre
for Offshore Research and Engineering). I was Professor of Mechanical
Engineering and Fellow of St Hugh's College from 1989 to 2009, and served a
five-year term as Head of the Department of Engineering Science from 1999-2004.
Prior to this I was Lecturer, Reader and Professor of Ocean Engineering at
University College London, where I also took my turn as Dean of Engineering.
I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering
in 1990, and was a member of Council from 2003-2007. As Vice-President from
2004-2007 I had responsibility for the Academy's Research Chairs and
Fellowships. I am a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and of
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
