REF results celebrated

The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division (MPLS) celebrated the outstanding achievements of Oxford University departments in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment exercise at its Winter Party, which was held last week in St John’s College. In the REF exercise the Department of Engineering Science was ranked the best engineering department in the country.

Outstanding Achievement Apprenticeship Award

Congratulations to Kathryn Scott, Engineering Science Administrative Assistant based at the Department’s Southwell Laboratory, who has been awarded the University of Oxford apprentice prize for outstanding achievement and progress. Young Engineer Travel Award

Congratulations to Roberto Maffulli, a graduate student in the Department’s Turbomachinery Research Group supervised by Professor Li He, for winning a prestigious 2014 Young Engineer Travel Award. This was recently awarded to Roberto by the International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI), a technical institute of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Roberto’s research is focussed on developing an understanding of the way in which thermal boundary conditions affect heat loads to turbine blades.

Rolls-Royce Director visits world class Thermo-Fluids Laboratory

The Department of Engineering Science recently hosted a visit from Dr Colin Smith, Director or Engineering and Technology at Rolls-Royce, to its Southwell Laboratory in Osney Mead, Oxford. Dr Smith had visited the building several years ago when it was first acquired by the Department and during his visit this time, he was able to see that it is now full of world class operational research facilities.

The Royal Aeronautical Society honours Professor Terence Jones for lifetime contributions to Aerospace

Professor Terry Jones has been awarded the prestigious Silver Medal by the Royal Aeronautical Society for his lifetime contributions to Aerospace. Professor Jones led the Department of Engineering Science Turbo-machinery Research Group from 1988 to 2005 and was responsible for many engineering innovations, which include the invention of the Isentropic Light Piston Tunnel (ILPT) used for turbine research.
