  • Gerald Gan    |    New College   |   MEng Project   |   Oct 2016 - June 2017

Gerald's project concerned engineering of meta-materials using photolithography 3D printing technology. He has studied the ideal combination of micro-architectures in conjunction with novel material properties, to achieve unconventional mechano-electro-magneto behaviours.

  • Sam Attias    |    Magdalen College   |   MEng Project   |   Oct 2016 - June 2017
Sam's project involved development of an ultra-sensitive smart sensor targeting biomedical applications, incorporating novel MOF materials discovered in the MMC Lab. He has studied how to tailor new materials to achieve ppm-level reversible detection, coupled with a fast response time.

  • Dr. Mahdi Ezwan Mahmoud   |   Balliol College  |   DPhil (viva 24 March 2017)   |   Oct 2013 - April 2017

Mahdi's DPhil project concerned the development of high-performance MOF-based nanocomposites for environmental remediation and sustainability applications, emphasising on water desalination and purification, and clean energy conversion and storage. His doctoral research at Oxford was fully funded by the Yayasan Khazanah Merdeka Scholarship. Mahdi completed his BSc in Engineering (2008) from the University of Washington, and Master of Engineering Science (2012) from the University of Malaya. Before joining Oxford in October 2013, he was an R&D Engineer in the Materials Technology Group at the Malaysian Nuclear Agency.

  • Dr. Luke Mizzi   |  Visiting Scientist (University of Malta)   |   Apr 2016 - Jun 2016

Luke's project at Oxford was funded by the Royal Society's Commonwealth Science Conference (CSC) Mentoring Grant. The topic of his research concerned mechanical metamaterials, focusing on the innovative designs and computational optimisations of auxetic structures with anomalous mechanical response useful for engineering novel sensors, actuators and biomedical devices. He was a PhD student at the Metamaterials Unit in the University of Malta

  • Rebecca Venis    |    Balliol College   |   MEng Project   |   Oct 2015 - Jun 2016

Becky was a final-year MEng student studying Engineering Science at Balliol College. She performed her 4th year project (4YP) in the MMC Lab. Her research was focused on the design and development of novel methodologies for electrospinning of 3D nano-achitectured fibre materials. Her MEng project was co-supervised by Kirill Titov.

  • Imogen Buchan   |    Mansfield College   |   MEng Project   |   Oct 2013 - Jun 2014

Imogen was a final-year MEng student studying Engineering Science at Mansfield College. Her project focused on the electrochemical synthesis of metal-organic framework thin films and the post-synthetic characterisation of their mechanical properties. Her MEng project was co-supervised by Matthew Ryder.

  • Saleem Lubbad   |   St Edmund Hall   |   MEng Project   |   Oct 2013 - Jun 2014

Saleem was a final-year MEng student studying Engineering Science at St Edmund Hall. His project concerned the development of a novel dynamic-mode microindenter for studying strain-rate dependence of advanced materials, microporous structures and hierarchical composites. His project was co-supervised by Prof. Nik Petrinic, who heads the Oxford Impact Engineering Laboratory at Begbroke Science Park.

  • Dr. Manuela Covaciu  |   Visiting Scientist (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile)   |   Nov 2013 - Jun 2014

Manuela is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile studying, by a multi-technique approach, the fabrication of functional materials with controlled fine-scale porosity. She is an expert in the utilisation of 3D printing for generating bespoke micro-cellular materials and foams with engineered porosity. Her research was funded by the Fondo Nacional de Desarollo Cientifico y Tecnologico (FONDECYT Chile), which enabled her to spend 9 months at Oxford between the period of November 2013-July 2014.

  • Dr. Ben Van de Voorde   |   Visiting Scientist (KUL Leuven, Belgium)   |   Jan 2013 - Feb 2013

Ben was a 2nd Year PhD student from the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering in KU Leuven (in the group of Prof. Dirk De Vos). He was awarded a prestigious research grant from the National Fund for Scientific Research (NWFO, Belgium) to work in the MMC Lab. During his short stay here from Jan-Feb 2013, he has studied the nanomechanical characterisation of a number of MOF thin films and coatings.
