The Guidance Scholarship

Mark SheehanThe Department of Engineering Science thanks Guidance Ltd for funding a DPhil scholarship which has been awarded to Mark Sheehan (Brasenose College). In 2009 Mark graduated from Oxford with a MEng in Engineering Science.

Mark's project involves the construction and calibration of a 3D laser scanner with high measurement fidelity. 3D laser scanners are important in robotics as they provide the robot with accurate dense surveys of a robot's surroundings, which can be used for many different purposes including robotic navigation, 3D map generation and object identification. This laser scanner has been developed with the aim of allowing a fully autonomous car to sense its surroundings and navigate accordingly.

Mark said, "I am very fortunate to have been given this wonderful opportunity to join one of the world's leading research groups in robotics, especially at a time when so many interesting problems with significant real world applications exist."
