Research

My research interests cover a wide range of structural dynamics problems, including earthquake engineering, hybrid test methods, dynamics of historic masonry structures and suspension bridge dynamics. Outlines of some current projects can be found on the group’s Research page. My current graduate students (several of them co-supervised) are:

  • Christos Basagiannis - seismic design using elastomeric dampers
  • Sathvik Dev
  • Giuseppe del Gobbo - using dampers to improve the seismic protection of non-structural elements in buildings
  • Robin Malloy - optimal placement of damping devices for pounding
  • Xiaodong Shi
  • Xuanli Sun

Please note: Due to work commitments I am unable to supervise any new students. Please do not email enquiring after graduate opportunities or enter my name as a potential supervisor on graduate applications.

Teaching

Current lecture courses:

  • Dynamics (1st year, paper P3)
  • Structural steel design (4th year, paper C5)
  • Structural dynamics (4th year, paper C5)

College tutorials:

  • Structures and mechanics (First year, paper P3)
  • Mathematical methods (Second year, paper A1)
  • Structures, mechanics and materials (Second year, paper A3)

Administration

I’m currently an elected member of Council of the University and serve on the University's Research Committee.
