Shard: Silk in High Rate Applications and Research into Damage Tolerance

Working in collaboration with the Oxford Silk Group, http://users.ox.ac.uk/~abrg/spider_site/ , this Leverhulme Trust funded project investigates the response of silks to high strain rate and impact deformation.  We will examine the structure and properties of different silks to better understand the mechanisms involved under high speed deformation through novel characterisation techniques and cutting edge modelling.

Low Rate

This project investigates strain rate dependence in the mechanical properties of PVD.  We aim to improve predictive modelling of high strain rate response from data obtained in low strain rate expeirments.
