Fionn Dunne was appointed Professor of Engineering Science in 2006 and has been in the Department of Engineering Science at Oxford University since 1996. Prior to this, he was a lecturer at Sheffield University and UMIST. His current research is in micro-mechanics and fundamentals of deformation and failure particularly relating to aerospace materials.  He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Plasticity, the Journal of Multiscale Modelling and the Journal of Strain Analysis; he is Associate Editor of Philosophical Magazine.  He is author of over 100 articles (the majority in international journals) and is co-author of Introduction to Computational Plasticity, OUP, 2005. He is a consultant to Rolls-Royce, a member of their Core Materials Working Group and was a Royal Society Industry Fellow for the year 05/06 which was spent with Rolls-Royce plc. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2010.
Current research interests are in the fundamentals of deformation (as a pre-cursor to fatigue crack nucleation), and projects address dislocation density and cell structure development, slip transfer, micro-texture and twinning in single- and two-phase polycrystals and strong collaborations exist with Dr Angus Wilkinson’s research group in the Department of Materials. While fundamental in nature, the application is broad which is reflected in collaborations with industries, recently including Rolls-Royce Aero and Marine, BMW, Nippon Steel, QinetiQ, Tata Steel, and NPL.
