The Oxford University Technology Centre in Solid Mechanics celebrates it's first 25 Years

The Solid Mechanics and Materials Group conducts work across a wide range of topics and for a number of companies.

As well as following basic lines of research, it has, at its core, a University Technical Centre funded by Rolls-Royce plc.

Within this, experimental, theoretical and numerical investigations are conducted across several disciplines including materials characterisation, residual stress analysis, impact engineering, fracture mechanics and contact analysis.  The Centre was started in late 1989, when the founder director was Emeritus Professor Carlos Ruiz.

We have recently celebrated our first twenty five years as a UTC, during which we have grown and developed very significantly.  The photograph below was taken at our recent 25th Annual Review, held at Rolls-Royce PLC, in Derby. The UTC was presented with a mounted wide chord fan blade to commemorate our achievements for the company over that period.  The photograph includes current research students and research and administrative staff, together with the inaugural director.
