The nickel-based superalloys are critical materials for high temperature applications, e.g. the gas turbines used for jet propulsion and electricity generation. In this seminar, the latest research in the speaker's group will be reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on: (i) process modelling for the simulation of manufacturing processes such as casting and joining (ii) behavioural aspects, for example the modelling of creep deformation, with composition-dependent terms accounted for and (iii) alloy design methods, for the isolation of new grades of alloy with superior properties or combinations of properties. Future prospects will be reviewed.
