The Department of Engineering Science intends to appoint an Associate Professor in Engineering Science (Civil or Structural Engineering) from 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible after that. The successful candidate will work at the Department of Engineering Science (Central Oxford) and will be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at New College under arrangements described in the Job Description.
The combined university and college salary will be on a scale from £46,336 p.a. plus substantial additional benefits including; accommodation in housing provided by the college (subject to availability) or a housing allowance of £9,752 p.a., a Tutorial Fellow’s allowance of £10,023 and a Fellows’ allowance £3,443 p.a. (please see the job description for details of all allowances). The post of Associate Professor can be an entry-level permanent academic position, and can also be held by more senior academic staff, some of whom hold the title of Full Professor for which an allowance of £2,700 p.a. is payable. The appointment will be initially for 5 years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.
This appointment will add further strength to the Department’s internationally-renowned research in civil and structural engineering and its applications, which covers a broad spectrum. In structures, there is a significant programme in structural dynamics, including earthquake-resistant design, structural vibrations, system identification and structural health monitoring. Other research activities in civil engineering include deployable structures, offshore and coastal engineering, marine renewable energy, and geotechnical engineering. The appointment will be initially for 5 years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in original research in the field of civil or structural engineering, to secure research funding and to assist in the teaching of their subject at both undergraduate and graduate level. Undergraduate teaching may include lectures and practical classes, and the supervision of undergraduate design and project work.
She or he will have a strong background applicable to research in civil engineering, including a doctorate in the subject or a cognate discipline, a proven research record of high quality at international level, significant future research potential, and the ability to attract research funding and develop an independent programme of research. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach effectively, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, and have excellent interpersonal skills for undertaking tutorial teaching.
