A Thermomechanical Approach to Constitutive Modelling of Geomaterials

A new framework for the theoretical modelling of soils has been developed. The starting point is previous work on applications of thermodynamic principles to the constitutive modelling of soils by Houlsby. The previous formulation has been recast using Legendre transformations to allow expression of the necessary functions in plasticity theory. The new approach is yielding useful insights into the nature of frictional behaviour, and its link to non-associated plasticity theory.
