Finite Element analysis

Numerical FE mesh

The development of the new design methodology during the PISA project is supported by numerical analyses conducted by Imperial College and validated by large scale field tests.

The numerical analysis uses the finite element method of analysis (FEM), employing the Imperial College Finite Element Program (ICFEP). The effect of varied pile geometry, soil characteristics and loadings have been explored.

Analyses were carried out to support the design of the field tests and to understand how soil reaction components vary over the realistic parameter spaces.

More detail on the methods employed can be found in the ISFOG conference paper 'Numerical modelling of large diameter piles under lateral loading for offshore wind applications'.
