Spark Ignition in Gas Engines

An engine and test rigs have been used, to allow electrical measurements to be made under well defined pressure and flow conditions. Measurements of the arc voltage and current are being used to indicate how breakdown, arc growth, and arc detachment are affected by spark plug gap, orientation, temperature, pressure, and flow past the spark plug, for inductive and other ignition systems.

The aim is to improve the understanding of the spark ignition process, so as to ensure reliable ignition and minimise the spark plug erosion rate. This is particularly important for stationary gas engines, which require service intervals of many thousand hours.
