Professor David Clarke

Background

David Clarke is an emeritus Professor of Control Engineering within the Department of Engineering Science at Oxford University. He is an emeritus Fellow and Tutor at New College, Oxford, where he gave undergraduate tutorials in mathematics, electrical, control and information engineering. He is a Fellow of the IEE, of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the Royal Society.

Research

His research interests are in Adaptive Predictive Control (APC) and in the Self-Validation (SEVA) of field instrumentation. In particular he is interested in the deep understanding of sensor technology and of the novel signal-processing methods required to make significant advances in the accuracy, performance, and reliability of intelligent instruments. Using SEVA devices and APC enables the concept of 'Limp-Home Control' in which an overall control system is reconfigured after a device failure, thereby increasing the availability of industrial processes. He was Director of the Invensys University Technology Centre (UTC) for Advanced Instrumentation.
