The wind power group researchs the aerodynamics of wind turbines, and in particular multiple turbine interactions within wind farms.

The wind energy research group is based within the Environmental Fluid Mechanics section of the Civil Engineering Group in the Department of Engineering Science. The group conducts research into energy generation from the wind, primarily through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

The wind energy research group works closely with the tidal energy research group, employing many similar computational analyses of wind turbine aerodynamics and tidal turbine hydrodynamics.

Research within the group falls broadly into two categories:

  • single turbine aerodynamics, in particular for improving reduced order wind turbine models
  • multiple turbine interactions within wind farm configurations
