Axial Flow Devices

Rotor vorticityThe ability to predict the performance of an array of tidal energy extraction devices or the total energy capture from a basin of devices relies heavily on a good knowledge of the energy extraction, performance and wake profile of single standalone devices. Whilst device developers have conducted some performance testing on single devices in controlled incident conditions, relatively little is known of how realistic inflow conditions such as turbulence and surface waves will impact on device performance.

Numerical simulations of generic bare and ducted axial flow devices in realistic flow conditions are being carried out to better establish performance and wake structure when deployed in open water conditions.
