Vance Tan

Academic background

Vance is a recipient of the prestigious Sultan’s Scholar Scholarship Scheme, awarded by His Majesty The Sultan And Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. He graduated from the University of Warwick with a First Class (with Honours) Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and is currently reading for a DPhil in Civil Engineering, under the supervision of Professor Thomas Adcock.

Industrial experience

Vance received industrial training at Ove Arup dan Rakan-Rakan (Arup in Brunei), Hampshire County Council and the Public Works Department in Brunei. At Ove Arup, he was privileged to work on various aspects of the Temburong Bridge which will be the longest bridge in Southeast Asia upon completion in 2019.

Union experience and appointments held

Vance was also Information Secretary at the Brunei Students’ Union, an umbrella organisation that oversees about 40 Bruneian societies throughout the UK and Ireland. In 2015, he was the Chair of Warwick CASE, a society he co-founded to promote the art and science of the civil engineering discipline at Warwick.

Prior to that, he held several appointments including serving as the Student Liaison Officers for both the Institution of Civil Engineers and Institution of Structural Engineers Midlands branches.
