Simon WattsAirborne Surveillance Radar

After graduating from St John’s College, Simon obtained an MSc from the University of Birmingham, and later a PhD from CNAA in 1987, and DSc from the University of Birmingham in 2013. He joined Thales (then EMI Electronics) as a student apprentice in 1967, and since then has worked on a range of radar and EW projects, with a particular research interest in maritime radar and radar sea clutter. At the time of the Jenkin Lecture he was deputy Scientific Director of Thales UK, Defence Mission Systems. He is now an independent consultant, and also Visiting Professor in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London. Simon received the IEE JJ Thomson Premium Award in 1987 and the IEE Mountbatten Premium Award in 1991. He was appointed MBE in 1996 for services to the UK defence industry, and was elected FREng in 2000.
