Three prestigious IET awards for Department spin-out OrganOx

OrganOx Ltd, a spin-out co-founded by academics Professor Constantin Coussios in Engineering Science and Professor Peter Friend in Surgical Sciences, was recently awarded 3 out of 15 possible 2013 innovation awards by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), alongside its prototype development partner Team Consulting Limited.

New international initiative focuses on brain mechanics and trauma research

Dr Antoine Jérusalem, from the Department of Engineering Science, is one of the founders of a new international initiative that will focus research on brain problems. Along with colleagues from Oxford University, Purdue University, the Technical University of Madrid and the University of California they have established the International Brain Mechanics and Trauma Lab (IBMTL).

Daniel Mulvihill wins Tribology Trust Bronze Medal

Congratulations to Dr Daniel Mulvihill, who completed his doctorate at the Department of Engineering Science and Hertford College last year, for winning the 2013 Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Tribology Trust Bronze Medal Award.

Funding boost to develop new patient monitoring system

A team of researchers in the Department’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) and clinical staff from the Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Trust, led by Professor Lionel Tarassenko CBE, has developed an iPad-based early-warning system with Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding. This is one of the projects funded by the ‘Safer Hospitals, Safer Wards’ £260 million NHS Technology Fund to improve patient safety.

Announcement of the 2013-2014 Sloane Robinson Foundation Scholarships

This year the Sloane Robinson Foundation has awarded two scholarships to graduates undertaking the Department of Engineering Science’s MSc course in Biomedical Engineering. The two students are Thaís Roque (Jesus College) from Brazil and Ritankar Das (Lincoln College) from India.

New spin-out to target Chinese market

Translating and packaging research and technologies for the Chinese market will be the mission of the latest spin-out company founded by Professor Zhanfeng Cui, the Department’s Donald Pollock Professor of Chemical Engineering based at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Oxford MESTAR has been set up by Isis Innovation, the University of Oxford’s technology commercialisation company.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2013 William James Award Winner

Congratulations to the Department's DPhil student, Joachim Behar, for winning this year's prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) 2013 William James Award. This month Joachim was presented with a prize, a plaque and a certificate in recognition of his work on "Non invasive foetal electrocardiography" at the IET Achievement Awards Ceremony in London.
