Gold Medal for University's iGEM Team

The University of Oxford’s first ever iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machines) team has been awarded a prestigious Gold Medal at the 2014 Giant iGEM Jamboree in Boston, USA. The team of 12 third year undergraduates across five subject disciplines, including three Engineering Science undergraduates, was the first to represent Oxford at the competition.

National award for project providing better care for women with diabetes during pregnancy

A project which has harnessed technology to improve care for women who develop diabetes during pregnancy has won a national prize. The team behind GDm-health - the gestational diabetes smartphone app - received the Best Digital Initiative trophy at the Quality in Care Diabetes Awards.

Vibhab Vineet receives "Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman 2014 Award"

Congratulations to Vibhab Vineet, a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Department's Torr Vision Group, who has received the prestigious “Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman 2014 Non-residential Indian Award” for outstanding services, achievement and contributions for keeping the "flag of India high" in celebration of the 145th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth.

First Korean Workshop on Future Science and Technology

In August this year, during a visit to South Korea, Oxford University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Hamilton, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Research Co-operation with the Korean Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). This was followed up recently by a 17-strong ETRI delegation visiting Oxford for the first ETRI-Oxford Workshop on Future Science and Technology.

New spin-out targets new frontiers of robotic technology

A new spin-out from the Department of Engineering Science and Isis Innovation will target new opportunities in robotics and autonomous systems. The firm, Oxbotica, has been founded by Professor Ingmar Posner and Professor Paul Newman - leaders of the Department's internationally acclaimed Oxford Mobile Robotics Group (MRG).

University of Oxford teams up with Google DeepMind

A team from the Department of Engineering Science will be joining the artificial intelligence lab Google DeepMind, establishing new collaborations between the two institutions. As part of the collaboration (which also involves the Department of Computer Science) the University will receive a significant seven figure contribution from Google to be split between the two departments.

IET Control and Automation PhD Award winner announced

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) judging committee has just announced the winner of the IET Control and Automation Doctoral Dissertation Prize for 2014, which has been awarded to the Department’s postdoctoral research assistant Dr Sandira Gayadeen (St. Hugh's College, 2010) for her thesis on 'Synchrotron Electron Beam Control'. The International Commission for Optics Prize 2014

Congratulations to Professor Martin Booth, Head of the Dynamics Optics and Photonics Group at the Department of Engineering Science, who has been awarded the 2014 International Commission for Optics (ICO) Prize “for his innovative and pioneering research on dynamic optical methods and new approaches to adaptive optics”.

International research to lead to better head protection

Antoine Jérusalem, Associate Professor with the Department, and Alain Goriely, Professor in the Mathematical Institute, both founders of the International Brain Mechanics and Trauma Lab (IBMTL) that focuses research on brain problems, are working in partnership with Professor Michel Destrade from NUI Galway and Dr Jerry Murphy, from Dublin City University, on measuring the engineering characteristics of brain matter.
