The 2014 Alumni Weekend - a first for the Department
In the morning a group of Engineering alumni and their families were the first visitors to the new Weston Library (formerly the New Bodleian). They viewed Marconi’s rare books and manuscripts from the Library’s special collections and were given a tour of the newly refurbished building, which officially opens in March 2015. The Marconi Archives document the pioneering work of Guglielmo Marconi in wireless telegraphy. Items viewed included records of wireless communications during the Titanic disaster in 1912; maps showing the tracking of German ships and zeppelins during World War 1; and papers relating to the construction of Frank Whittle’s prototype jet engine.
In the afternoon the Department staged two highly entertaining and informative lectures. Professor Lionel Tarassenko, the new Head of the Department of Engineering Science, unveiled “The 2020 Vision for Engineering Science in Oxford” and Professor Paul Newman, BP Professor of Information Engineering and Head of the Oxford Mobile Robotics Group, delivered the Jenkin Lecture, titled: “The Oxford RobotCar”, which gave a fascinating insight into how we will eventually have cars that can drive themselves. Guests also had the opportunity to see the Oxford RobotCar, a range of working robots and meet the Mobile Robotics Group research team.

Formed in 1988, SOUE enables alumni and Faculty members to keep in touch: www.soue.org.uk. President of SOUE, Martyn Hurst, said: “The SOUE also runs a LinkedIn group - it’s a great way to get in contact with other engineers and members of the Faculty”.
