Sharp Donates Digital Information Display Screens

The Department of Engineering Science thanks Sharp Laboratories of Europe (SLE) for donating five large information digital screens. These were recently installed at the Department and now provide students, academics, visitors and staff with up-to-date information on current research projects, upcoming events and seminars, recent news items and details about recruitment fairs and job vacancies.

In December, Sharp representatives (pictured below) visited the Department and were able to see the part the screens are playing in students’ lives. Dr Stephen Bold said: “It is fitting that these liquid crystal displays should be here in the Department where so much excellent liquid crystal research has been done. I look forward to fresh collaboration in the fields of photovoltaic energy generation and management.

Sharp’s relationship with the Department spans many years and both parties have benefitted from numerous research collaborations. The recruiting of talented researchers by SLE from the Department of Engineering Science has been a frequent occurrence too. Dr Graham Cairns, Sharp’s Director of European Design Centre, for example, was both an undergraduate in the Department and studied for his Doctorate here.

We are grateful to Sharp Laboratories of Europe Limited for generously supporting this initiative, and for continuing its commitment to the work undertaken by the Department.
