OTI researcher chairs 10th International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics

Dr Neil Ashton of the Oxford ThermoFluids Institute (OTI) is the chair and lead organiser of the 10th international conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics in Barcelona from 9-13 July 2018.

ICCFD, the International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics, is a leading international conference devoted to all innovative aspects of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), fundamental and applied, which began in 2000. The conference includes a combination of five plenary talks, four keynotes including special guest speaker Jaiwon Shin, Associate Administrator for Aeronautics at NASA, and four parallel sessions of the latest fundamental and applied CFD research.

Dr Ashton says, “In the age of industry 4.0 and the digital twin, virtual simulation tools and methods such as Computational Fluid Dynamics are crucial to the growth and success of UK Plc. From wing-design at Airbus to car design at Jaguar Land Rover, CFD is being used on a daily basis to deliver the fuel efficient vehicles of the future. ICCFD10 aims to provide a platform for academics and industry to discuss the latest CFD methods and applications that can help CFD to be used with greater confidence”.

Dr Ashton is a Senior Researcher for the OTI with a particular specialism in Computational Aerodynamics and leads their automotive aerodynamics group. His research focuses on both fundamental and applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), with the main aim of developing improved turbulence models and approaches for complex industrial simulations. He has worked on a number of EU projects with leading companies such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Volkswagen and DLR to develop new turbulence models suitable for complex industrial flows.

Research from the Department’s Combustion and Engines Group will be presented in one of the conference sessions: ‘Optimising the Flow within a Stirling Pulse Tube Cryocooler’ (Professor Richard Stone, Dr Mohammad Amin Abolghasemi, Paul Bailey and Michael Dadd).
