The annual award ceremony, now in its 9th year, aims to inspire and recognise the next generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers in Oxfordshire, encouraging them to consider a career in engineering.

Lewis joined the Department of Engineering Science in September 2017 after completing his GCSEs at St Birinus School in Didcot. As part of his apprenticeship he has been attending ATG training in Aylesbury, studying mechanics standards level 2, and has completed training in hand fitting, basic turning and basic milling.

As getting to and from college was a challenge for Lewis initially, he took the tough decision to stay in a guest house during the week to enable him to concentrate on his studies. Alan Digby, training Coordinator at ATG comments, “Lewis has been a pleasure to teach this year, he has worked hard and listened well. His written work has also been of a good standard. He is a credit to Oxford University and will become a good engineer in the future as he has the right work ethic.”

Lewis has been an excellent addition to the Department and we look forward to seeing him progress in the coming years.

Engineering Apprenticeships

Becoming an Apprentice is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience and training. We are currently recruiting for two Apprentice Mechanical Technicians at the Department – one will be based at Southwell Lab, Osney Mead, and the other will join our Staff Student Workshop. The apprenticeships offer the chance to learn basic engineering skills plus study for formal qualifications. The apprentices work alongside experienced colleagues whilst learning on the job.
