Building Partnerships

Guy Houlsby, Professor of Civil Engineering at the Department of Engineering Science, has just returned from the University of Western Australia (UWA), where he was the 2016 Institute for Advanced Studies Distinguished Visiting Fellow.

Whilst he was at UWA he gave a public lecture on “Marine Renewable Energy: Technology, Opportunities and Challenges”, which was attended by an audience of over 280. He also gave a four day master-class course on “Hyper-plasticity”, based on his book published with Professor Puzrin of ETH Zurich, with 19 invited attendees from UWA, Newcastle University, Sydney University, Delft University of Technology and China University of Geosciences.

During his visit he met with students and academics from the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) to discuss ongoing research and research opportunities in geo-mechanics. This continues a long-standing relationship between the Department of Engineering Science and COFS, where the Director is Professor Mark Cassidy, a past Rhodes Scholar and research student at the Department.
